Dallas, Texas (April 1, 2011) -- It was about 7:30 a.m. when students and university faculty began filtering in and receiving their packets for the 43rd Annual FGI Career Day, an exciting event that offered over 1,300 students from 12 different states information and classes on careers and opportunities involving the fashion industry.
As a spectator, I wash honored and excited to be given the opportunity to observe and experience the inner-workings of what exactly makes up Fashion Group's Career Day. For many students, including myself, this marked our first year as participants. The fast-flowing schedule and organization made the experience and transitions between classes and events run seamlessly.
At 8:00 a.m., after we'd all gathered in them main meeting area, Amy Harper, FGI Regional Director, opened the day. The first speaker was Chuck Steelman, Public Relations Manager for Neiman Marcus at Willowbend. He treated us by sharing all of the biggest fashion trends for Spring/Summer 2011 and providing a wonderful fashion show. After the runway presentation, we were released and given a few minutes to wonder through the various student fashion display set-ups before proceeding to classes that covered topics such as retail management, fashion writing and journalism.
Around 12:00 p.m., we all gathered in them ain area once again while Dr. Sheri Dragoo announced this years winners for the TDA Natural Fiber Trend Board Awards. Congratulations to Kinsey McCabe and Traci Carter of Texas Tech University, and Alexis Ybarra of El Centro Community College, who received first place honors in the cotton, wool and mohair categories respectively. Lastly, Amy Harper announced the winner for the Neiman Marcus Fashion Illustration Award. That honor went to Katrina Lee from The University of North Texas.
After the awards, we stayed seated so that Stephanie Gieselman, Director of Merchandising for JuJu Belle, could introduce their new and innovative company coming to the Dallas/Fort Worth market. JuJu Belle features interchangeable, make-it-yourself jewelry. It was exciting to learn that a bracelet chain only costs about $4.00 and a necklace chain costs $6.00. Stephanie said that when all was said and done, a make-it-yourself bracelet or necklace never exceeded $10.00. JuJu Belle, based in Denton, Texas, also offered collections of already made jewelry for about $45.00.
About 1:00 p.m., we were released to attend one more class before students would make their way into the final event, a fashion show featuring the top students' designs and garments. Congratulations to all of those whose garments were lucky enough to be chosen.
Overall, my experience at the 43rd Annual FGI Career Day was a complete success. The tools and information offered to the many students in attendance will serve to educate and help them accomplish the life and career that they want to have in fashion. All in all, it was a complete success.
